Weight Loss Surgery Q & A

Who is a candidate for weight-loss surgery?

Dr. Rincon evaluates your current health and commitment to your goals when considering whether you’re a candidate for weight-loss surgery. You may qualify for weight-loss surgery if:

  • You’ve been unsuccessful in losing weight with diet and exercise
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is greater than 40
  • You have a BMI of 35 and several chronic conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension, that are related to your weight

What types of weight-loss surgery are possible?

Dr. Rincon performs a variety of weight-loss surgeries which all allow patients to achieve rapid and lasting weight loss. These include:

  • Gastric bypass, which involves reducing the functional portion of the stomach to one ounce or less and creating a stoma – a small opening between the pouch and a section of your small intestine – to slow digestion and decrease absorption
  • LAP-BAND®, a laparoscopic surgery during which a silicone ring is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch
  • Gastric sleeve, a newer type of surgery during which Dr. Rincon laparoscopically reduces the size of the stomach by about 85% and leaves it in the shape of a tube or sleeve

What are the pros and cons of each surgery?

LAP-BAND surgery is one of the least invasive surgical options. Its benefits include:

  • No cutting or stapling of the stomach wall or bowel
  • Minimal scarring from small incisions
  • Reduced time in the hospital and recovery

The LAP-BAND itself is adjustable to tweak your rate of loss, but you must come in for frequent follow-up visits and fills. Lap bands can slip or prove ineffective in some patients.

Gastric bypass surgery has a high success rate with 75% of patients expected to lose 75-80% of their excess body weight. Patients who undergo the surgery are also expected to improve the symptoms of their medical conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and hypertension, or resolve them altogether.

On the flip side, gastric bypass is major surgery and people with obesity face greater risk of complications during anesthesia and in recovery. For the surgery to be successful, you must be dedicated to the process and your new diet and lifestyle.

Gastric sleeve surgery is newer, so there’s less research on its long-term effects. But, it’s appropriate for people who can’t return for lap band fills or who found gastric banding ineffective for their goals. It does effectively reduce your appetite but is irreversible.
